Any new build project is both a challenge and a dream for an architect where our abilities can be applied with minimal restrictions and maximum dedication to our clients requirements. My philosophy here is to produce a scheme which goes one step further in providing more than expected. A totally taylored service can be either a background 'help as you go' or be fully project design and managed up to occupation.
Very many of my projects have involved adapting, altering and extending property where the challenges have always been to extract the most from existing buildings. This can be the most satisfying and somtimes the most frustrating of exercises but the aim, as always, is to achieve more than expected.
Sports & Leisure
I started from university in Preston as the site/detail design architect on the Guild Hall- now hopefully being revitilized!
While working for Goad Burton Partnership in the 70’s I was design architect as overall consultant for the Edinburgh Tattoo stands, and specifically for the royal/control boxes, totally prefabricated in GRP, delivered by low loader and craned up 60ft.
More recent projects – a fantastic skatepark at Clitheroe Castle featured elsewhere, and the most significant scheme for me- The Grand- conversion of a dilapidated public hall into a state of the art 21st century live music and performance centre –again see more on the site.
Conservation & Listed Buildings
I have to an extent specialised in working on listed and conservation area buildings over the last 25 years, both in the local authorities and for instance on the Wirral, on projects too numerous to mention. Most of these projects have been for private clients who understandably wish to remain so. I believe that changes to listed buildings should be seen as a natural progression in history to adapt to current use and not as something that should be blocked for posterity.
Relationships with local authorities established over time can be a key to an understanding approach and success with planning issues. On very sensitive issues I can advise on the use of Planning Consultants or other specialists that may be needed.
I have past experience in the development and detailed design of shop premises, art and craft outlets and estate complexes, factories, high build factory storage units, offices and multi purpose live / work units.
Industrial projects have included the overall layout and design of individual units for the central lancs. Development Park, major high stack storage units in Southport and Bacup.
During working with Lancashire County Council as a team leader i was responsible for designing and developing the majority of projects for;
Runshaw College, Leyland: library block, teaching block, technology block
Blackburn College: overall spatial asssesment, building block, technology block, listed block, school conversion, site redevelopment
Burnley, Blackburn and Preston: new build of 4 major primary/ secondary schools for up to 480 pupils each, designed in the 80's on the first CAD system introduced at L.C.C. with one common central unit and add on standard class units that could accomodate individual sites and storey level changes, and could be extended in the summer holidays.
Health & Care
While working for Lancashire county Council I designed and was involved in numerous projects involving special schools and social services, including therapy pools and special needs facilities. More recently I have worked on residential home projects and extensions.
